Fun Fact: A good chunk of the "pumpkin" puree out there is actually made up of a variety of squashes, like butternut, hubbard, or golden delicious. Why? Those varieties have a better coloring and are less stringy than pie pumpkins. Even when the label says 100% pumpkin puree, there may still be some squash mixed in because squash and pumpkin are under the same genus and the USDA is very lenient with the term.
If you want to go all out this Thanksgiving, you can roast your own pie pumpkin and actually make the puree yourself. And if you prefer a healthier and gluten free pie we have a recipe for that too.
