Pre-pandemic, the Kalamazoo Farmers Market hosted an annual CSA Fair each February at different local area restaurants. Potential customers could stop by the fair, meet the Farmers and learn more about local CSAs. Instead of hosting an in-person event in 2021, we’ve compiled a nice list of our Vendors that also offer CSA shares for you to check out! There’s also a link to a guide from Taste The Local Difference of other local farms that are offering CSAs, and info on the 2021 Michigan Virtual CSA Fair hosted by MSU Extension!
What is a CSA? Community Supported Agriculture is when a group of individuals that pledge to support a farm and share in the risks and benefits of food production. In exchange, those individuals receive a weekly box of fresh, seasonal produce or other goods from your local Farmer. Essentially, a consumer buys a “share” of a farm’s harvest before the season begins, and then receives a portion of the crops as they are harvested. This provides farmers with much-needed early capital, and consumers with a guarantee of fresh vegetables all season long.
Crisp Country Acres
If you’ve been to the Market then you’ve probably heard of Crisp Country Acres out of Holland, MI. They have so many options for CSA shares, you can even choose between produce or egg shares. Pick up your box on Saturday’s at KFM during the season, or at Crisp Country Acres alternative spot in Kalamazoo during the Winter. Visit their online store for more info!
